Evaluation of Nitrite and Leukocyte Esterase Tests for the Detection of Bacteriuria

Abstract

|
The nitrite and leukocyte esterase(LE) tests have been used for a long time as a screening of the urinary tract infection. To evaluate the usefulness of nitrite and LE tests as a screening test for bacteriuria, we analyzed 163 urine specimens
submitted
for urine culture by Combur-9-test strip, and compared the results with those of conventional culture methods. The nitrite-LE combination results, which was considered as positive if either one or both were positive, showed a sensitivity of
61.3%,
a
specificity of 74.4% and a negative predictive value of 88.2%.
